Best drive for Thompson Sky+ ?

Postby gadgetman » Tue Oct 27, 2009 11:42 pm

Mine's a late 2007 Thompson box (model 129e163, version 4e2125) and want to upgrade as always running out of space.

Is there a list of known compatable & good (quieter) drives anywhere as a faq?
Does anytime auto grab/partition 80gb, or is this set in Copy+ when you clone your old drive?

Many thanks.

Try here

The 80GB is hard coded in the Sky software.
Please leave the drive partition size at the default, as shown in Copy+. This will be the full size of your drive.

Thank you very much for the list link. But I cant find any of the 250gb or 500gb drives on any of the main sites (Dabs, Ebuyer etc).

I have to say that PATA drives are becoming harder to find these days. Most manufacturers have moved over to the SATA for the newer designs.
Sorry.

Hmm.

So looks like uncharted waters for any drive I opt for. Any 'safe' bets? As in manufacturers/specs?

Look for drives rated as AV or CE (Consumer Electonics) compatible. These are designed for use in PVRs.
Search DigitalSpy and on here for the exact model number and see if anyone has had issue with the drive before purchasing.

In the end I opted for a WD5000AAKB.

After speaking to someone that works for a drive manufacturer, the only difference between standard drives and their AV cousins is the firmware. Hardly worth a £10-20 hike on the std drive.
