You can use MPEG Streamclip to: open and play most movie formats including MPEG files or transport streams;

Transport Stream (TS) = STR file (STR=Stream)

OK. Does this mean that the file suffix has to be changed from .str to .ts to be recognised?

Missed your reply just now pcbbc. Thanks for the link which downloaded a 20Mb installation file as opposed to the 408kb one wit ENG in the title. This looks far more promising.

My tenacity is somewhat dulled by being in bed with flu so I keep dozing off. I'll try it after my next kip!

NP - I think what you had downloaded before was the Java source code - which I agree you'd need to be a programmer to understand or know how to use.
I am sure you will find the installer a lot easier, but shout if you need some pointers :)
Sorry to hear about the 'flu. :shock:

Well, I'm impressed. There could be a mass of simplification of the GUI which looked a bit frightening, especially as it was offering file types that I didn't recognise, (nor anyone else it would seem after googling), but the m2p format was recognised, presumably as mp2, and played faultlessly.

Well that seems to be the state of the game then. Extract with Extract +, then convert with Project X to an m2p file. Two programs but I can live with that.

Thanks for the help.
